The National Dairy Development Board was set up in order to bring about modernity, growth, and empowerment of the dairy sector in the country. It was also set up to make the dairy sector an instrument for the growth and development of the rural people in India.
The mission of The National Dairy Development Board is to make dairy a process that will help to make better the future of the village level milk producers. The Board in order to fulfill its aim launched Operation Flood, a program that extended for a period of more than 26 years and in which the Board used loan from the World Bank. This program whose third phase completed in 1996 helped India to become the biggest milk producing nation in the whole world.
The National Dairy Development Board has led and planned the dairy programs in the country by giving the responsibility of dairy development in the hands of professionals and milk producers that they employ to deal with their cooperatives. Further, The National Dairy Development Board also encourages cooperatives that are based on commodity, veterinary biological and allied industries on a country wide basis.
The 1,17,575 village dairy cooperatives in India have been federated into around 170 milk unions and about fifteen federations received on an average basis each day around 21.5 million liters of milk as in March, 2006. The business and affairs of The National Dairy Development Board are managed and controlled by the Board of Directors. The Chairman of The National Dairy Development Board is Dr (Ms) Amrita Patel and the Managing Director is Shri Deepak Tikku.
